Exceptional Redware Vase with Profuse Three-Color Slip Decoration, PA or MD origin, first quarter 19th century, ovoid form with footed base, tall collar, and ribbed open handles at the shoulder, decorated on one side in copper, manganese, and cream-colored slip with a slip-trailed plant bearing tulip and pomegranates, emanating from a bulbous urn. Reverse decorated in three-color slip with a tulip plant bearing three large hanging buds. Body of vase and collar further decorated throughout with stylized flower blossom motifs. Shoulder decorated with spotted banding in three color slip and handles decorated with copper slip spots. Among the most heavily-decorated redware vases that we have seen. The tulip bud motif curiously resembles designs found on later stoneware produced by Winchester, Virginia potter, Samuel Bell. Provenance: Acquired by the consignor from a Frederick, MD area estate. Wear to body, rim, and handles. Base with a shallow 7/8" chip and a few minor chips. H 8".
