One-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "CHELSEA," MA origin, mid 19th century, tapering jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a bird perched on a flower. Includes salt-glazed lid. A 4 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Nicks and wear to inner rim for lid. A small in-the-firing ping to front. A 1" in-the-firing, glazed-over chip to right of decoration. A small in-the-firing ping and short, faint line to one handle. A 4 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 1 1/4" horizontal line to base. A 7" line on underside forming a 1 1/2" Y at base on reverse. Staining to reverse. A small, glazed-over dent to base on front. Lid with a chip to underside at edge and some wear to tip of knob. H (of jar excluding lid) 9 3/4".
