Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO: / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized, curving branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent condition with only minor flaws. A small chip to interior of rim. Some additional minor rim nicks. A small in-the-firing iron ping below one handle and other very minor in-the-firing surface flaws. A 1 3/4" surface line to midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. Some faint staining to reverse. H 10 1/2".
