Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump with stylized ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A glazed-over in-the-firing iron ping to right of bird. A worn area to left of bird. Some minor wear to cobalt. Minor wear to spout. A short horizontal line at base. A few minor base chips. Some light staining to base and reverse. H 14 1/4".
