Exceptional Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1775, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed vertical handles; decorated on the front and reverse with boldly slip-trailed watch spring motifs emanating from a stylized floral motif. Slip-trailed scalloped floral motifs emanate from the base of the handle and brushed cobalt highlights adorn the upper terminals. This jar is noteworthy for its crisp decoration and exemplary color and condition. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Excellent condition with a 3/4" base chip and some typical in-the-firing flaws, including a few iron pings to body and one to top of handle. H 12 1/4".
