Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn with Ravenswood, WV Advertising, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "W.G. WATTS. / DRY GOODS & C. / RAVENSWOOD. W. VA.." Further stenciled below with the maker's mark, "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA.." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder, midsection, and base. Various stenciled floral and geometric motifs throughout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A fine example of Western Pennsylvania "double-stenciled" stoneware bearing both the merchant's and maker's names, featuring an exceptionally rare West Virginia town name. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. A 7 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A faint 2 1/2" line to left of maker's stenciling. One handle with a minor chip and a minor worn spot. A chip to opposite handle. A 1" flake to interior of rim. A few small chips to inner rim for lid. Some minor bubbling and minor wear to cobalt. A tiny nick to shoulder molding on reverse. H 14 3/4".
