Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "W. ROBERTS / BINGHAMTON. NY," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an exceptionally large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with striped body and spotted wing, perched on flowering vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 4" inverted Y-shaped line to far left side of jar's front, near base. A shallow 7/8" rim chip on front. A minor in-the-firing ping to shoulder on front. A 2 1/4" vertical in-the-firing surface line at base on reverse, not visible on interior. Staining to rim. Some in-the-firing spalling to Albany slip on interior of rim. H 11 3/4".
