Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1870, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with spotted body and crosshatched tail, perched on a leaf. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. The wing and tail details on this example are unusual for the maker. Areas of professional restoration to surface including areas of touch-up to bird. A chip to interior of rim and two small, adjacent chips to interior of rim, which are glazed over. Tiny chips around inner rim for lid. H 17 3/4".
