Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Reclining Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a stag with turned head and spotted body, reclining atop a hill between two split-rail fences. A pine tree appears to the right of the deer and grasses to his left. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Crisp slip-trailing, excellent color, and heavy coverage of the design over the jar's front. Among the most iconic images in 19th century American stoneware. A thin 2 1/4" crack from rim on front. A faint 2 1/2" diagonal Y-shaped surface line to shoulder on front. Rim chips. A small, glazed-over iron ping to rim on reverse. Shallow chipping and wear to inner rim for lid. A thin, approximately 10" cross-shaped crack to left side of jar. Some discoloration to front base of jar. H 14 3/4".
