Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a flowering vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A thin 5" crack from rim on front. Some highpoint wear to cobalt. An in-the-firing contact mark to vine decoration. Two flakes below one handle. A small flake to same handle. A few minuscule nicks to interior of rim. H 11 1/4".
