Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated completely around the body with a horizontal tulip motif inspired by David Parr, Sr. of Baltimore, Maryland. Significant cracks in underside, extending up most of the jar's body on front and right side as well as base area on reverse. An 8 1/2" crack from rim on reverse including a few short lines. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing loss at base. A 1 1/2" U-shaped surface crack at base including a base chip. A few other minor base chips. A 2 3/4" in-the-firing flake to rim on front. A small, glazed-over chip to top of rim and a second, small in-the-making chip to top of rim. H 12".
