Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large four-petaled flower blossom, the petals interspersed with four groups of freehand swags. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Very nice condition. Four small chips to exterior of rim. Minor nicks to interior of rim. A 2 3/4" in-the-firing line descending from rim on interior, not visible on exterior. An in-the-firing unglazed spot to reverse end of one handle. Two short, faint surface lines at base on reverse, not visible on interior. H 12".
