One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An approximately 4 3/4" area of restoration to exterior surface of rim on left side of jar. An approximately 4" x 3" X-shaped line on front shoulder. An approximately 2 1/4" Y-shaped surface line to shoulder on front, not visible on interior. Minor wear to inner rim for lid. H 10 3/8".
