Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump with various stylized ground cover at its base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Missing lid. Includes old wooden dasher. Significant professional restoration to reverse, extending onto churn's right side and shoulder/rim area on far right side of churn's front. Some in-the-firing oversalting to decoration. A small in-the-firing ping to right side. A few minuscule nicks to churn's inner rim. H (of churn, excluding dasher) 15".
