Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "KNOTTS, SWINDLER & CO / PALATINE, / W.VA," circa 1875. semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring Knotts, Swindler & Co. maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled flourish. Freehand stripe below rim and at base. Reverse-stenciled "4" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 2 1/4" glazed-over in-the-firing ping to reverse. Four short in-the-firing surface fissures at base including minor chips. A 1" in-the-firing chip at base on front. A tiny nick and light wear to interior of rim. A 2 1/2" inverted Y-shaped in-the-firing line on interior of rim, not visible on exterior. H 14 7/8".
