Rare Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration and Wheeling, WV Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an unusual and large tulip vine design across the top half of the jar. Section below features the stenciled advertising "CHAS. R. MILLER. / FANCY / GROCERIES / 2339 CHAPLINE ST / WHEELING. W. VA.". Graduated cobalt dashes to the left and right. Base inscribed "8", flanked by flourishes. a difficult-to-find size in Wheeling advertising stoneware, featuring strong decoration and crisp stenciling. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in New England. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
