Rare Coggle-Decorated Stoneware Match Safe, probably Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1880, wheel-thrown, tapering form on flared base, decorated around the base with coggled serration and around the lower body with a coggled design of a crossing vine and spots. Surface covered in a light-brown wash over reddish clay. Presumably fired within a sagger or larger piece of stoneware. Provenance: Recently found in Morgantown, WV and likely of local origin. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 2 5/8" ; Diam. (at base) 2 5/8".
