Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER / ROCHESTER. N.Y.," late 19th century, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a tulip plant with crosshatched blossom. Slip-trailed "3" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. This particular maker's mark, lacking a "JR." at the end of the name, was likely made at the family pottery after the death of John Burger, Sr. in 1885. Very nice condition with wear and tiny chips to inner rim for lid and two spots of minor wear to decoration. H 13 3/4".
