Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump with stylized ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Two small, glazed-over iron pings to right of decoration. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to left of decoration. A shallow 1 1/8" base chip on front. Side of jug with a minor, 1 1/8" glazed-over line below a small glazed-over ping. Staining to base area. H 16".
