Fine One-and-a-Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with long tail and turned head, perched on a stump with stylized ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable size. Includes Northeastern salt-glazed stoneware lid, impressed "3," not original to the jar. Salt residue to right side of jar. A chip and two minor nicks to inner rim for lid. A small in-the-firing surface chip below bird's foot. Chips to lid. H (of jar, excluding lid) 10 3/4".
