Scarce Rebecca-at-the-Well Molded Stoneware Cooler with Three-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to the White's Pottery, Utica, NY, late 19th century, cylindrical cooler with circular bunghole at base, decorated on one side with a large and finely-molded Rebecca-at-the-well motif and on the reverse with the profile of a classical woman with grapevine crown, surrounded by ivy. Handles molded in the form of sea serpents. Decorated throughout in cobalt, green, and brown slip under a clear salt glaze. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Among the finest examples of White's Utica stoneware that we have ever offered. Loss to lower jaw of one sea serpent and a chip to belly of same figure. A 3 3/4" firing crack from rim on side of cooler. Minor rim chips. H 11 1/16".
