Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Star Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a bold, slip-trailed design of a star with detailed interior, surrounded by numerous foliate rays. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. An exceedingly rare decoration for this maker, the first of its kind that we have offered. The decoration and its scarce slip-trailed application are inspired by the Lyons, New York potting school, influential on Harrisburg's potters. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with minor staining. H 15".
