Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, brush-decorated with a bird perched on a stump beside a plant bearing dotted berries or flowers. Striped and spotted details to bird's wing, diagonal slashes to bird's tail, and striped shading to one side of stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Exceptional size. Excellent condition with only minor flaws: a 1 1/2" vertical hairline to base, a 1" line to underside at edge, a small base chip, a minor chip to underside at edge, and a tiny glazed-over spout chip. H 11 1/4".
