Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Jug-Form Cooler with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jug with two applied handles at the shoulder and circular bunghole at base, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable combination of form and decoration. Fry to cobalt. Two minor nicks to bunghole. A small chip to top of spout. A minor, inverted U-shaped line to exterior of spout on front. A salt drip and smooth in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. A second salt drip at base of one handle on reverse. Some staining. H 20".
