Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", New York State origin, circa 1870-1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an unusual slip-trailed foliate design resembling a tree. A small chip and minor nick to one handle. A small chip to opposite handle. Two chips to interior of rim, the larger measuring 1 1/8". Wear to inner rim which would hold a lid. A thin 4" crack from rim on front and a thin 4" crack from rim on reverse. Two in-the-firing vertical surface lines to base area on reverse, which are glazed over and not visible on the interior. Two surface lines to underside, probably in-the-firing and not visible on interior.
