Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with squared rim and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with three groups of graduated swags. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed under one handle with a J. Swank & Co. maker's mark along with a one-gallon capacity mark. A 1 1/2" chip to bottom edge of crock. A 6" crack from rim on side of crock. Two rim chips.
