Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Harvest Jug, Incised "S.N. Bailey" and Dated "1849," probably Beaver, PA, origin, circa 1849, ovoid vessel with flattened top, large circular spout, small hexagonal spout, and arching handle across the top. Heavily-decorated completely around with several different brushed cobalt floral designs, including blossoming plants, a large spotted flower, and pinwheel motifs. Additional cobalt brushed around the top edge, at the spouts, and along the handle. Incised on front "S.N. Bailey" and impressed on reverse "1849". The numbers 6 and 5 impressed on front and the number 9 impressed at handle terminals. Our assessment of the jug is that it is an early Beaver, PA, example, though similar decorations can be found on New York State stoneware. A highly desirable form with impressive decoration. Handle broken and reglued. Small flake on reverse. H (to top of handle) 13 1/4".
