Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "L. NORTON / BENNINGTON", Vermont origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a small incised design of a bird. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Relatively few incised examples of Norton family stoneware are known. A shallow chip to top of spout. An iron ping and in-the-firing contact mark to right side of jug. Some shallow chipping to base, most of which occurred during the firing.
