Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Unusual Cobalt Floral Decoration Resembling a Face, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff and Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with blossoms resembling eyes and the leaves resembling a nose and mouth. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some faint surface lines to reverse. Long horizontal crack at base with a thin 4" crack extending upward from it on side of jar, and another thin crack descending from it onto underside. Chips to inner rim where a lid would rest.
