Unusual Glazed Redware Pitcher, Mid-Atlantic origin, possibly Samuel Butter, Clarksburg, WV, circa 1820-1850, ovoid-bodied pitcher with concave band around midsection and semi-squared rim molding, the surface covered in a buff-colored slip accented with iron flecks throughout and coated in a clear lead glaze. The exact origin of this pitcher is unknown, although similar distinctive glazing can be found on a redware jug, stamped "Samuel Butter / Clarksburg, VA", pictured in the Ceramics in America 2004 article, The Potters and Potteries of Morgan's Town: The Earthenware Years, Circa 1796-1854, by Horvath and Duez, fig. 28. Missing handle. A 1" x 3/8" rim chip on reverse. Other shallow rim and spout chips. A few minor base chips. A flake to interior base. Glazed surface survives in excellent condition. H 9".
