Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large cluster of eight grapes hanging from a vine with three leaves and several corkscrewing tendrils. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A good example of a popular Harrisburg design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a sixty-year Midwestern collection. Some light exfoliation to shoulder area. Faint 4" Y-shaped surface line on side of crock, not visible on interior. Long V-shaped surface line visible on interior. A 8" section of this line is very faintly visible under the left handle. Three minor chips on interior of rim. One is glazed-over and another appears to also be in-the-firing.
