Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Henry H. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1840, approximately five-gallon, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and large lug handles, decorated with a highly unusual design of a plant with heavily-leaved branches encompassing a tulip. Collar decorated with brushed cobalt swags. Reverse decorated with oval-shaped branches surrounding large spots. Additional garland decoration under each handle. This jar is the first example we have seen with this particular decoration. Bloated spots to surface. Tight 6 3/4" crack from rim. Chipping to base.
