Outstanding Twenty-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Decoration, Stenciled Twice "JAS. HAMILTO & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with graduated freehand stripes flanking the stenciled mark surrounded by stenciled flowers. Decorated below with a spread-winged eagle holding arrows, olive branches, and a banner stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO." Base stenciled "GREENSBORO, PA" above a freehand "20" flanked by graduated vertical stripes. A visually-stunning and well-decorated example of Western PA stoneware. Near mint condition with a small chip to one handle, and a nick and small glazed-over chip to opposite handle. H 23 1/2".
