Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Freehand Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / Greensboro. / Greene Co. Pa," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with freehand dots, stripes, and vining at the shoulder, wavy stripes underscoring the stenciled words, and stenciled daisies flanking the number "5" at the base. An excellent example of Western Pennsylvania stenciled and freehand decoration. Exceptionally crisp stenciling. Provenance: Lynn White Collection, Readfield, ME. Light staining to surface. Otherwise mint condition. H 15 1/4".
