Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Thomas Haig, Jr., Philadelphia, PA, third quarter 19th century, domed form with heavily-tooled finial, arching tab handles, and applied hooded watering trough, the sides and reverse decorated with brushed cobalt tulips. Watering area surrounded by leaves and impressed with two cobalt-highlighted circles. This chicken waterer is strongly attributed to Haig based on the style of the tulip decoration. Salt-glazed waterers by Haig are considerably rarer than those by the Remmey family, and this example is potted in a desirable small size. Provenance: Recently discovered in a New Jersey. Dryness to surface. Some small chips to edge of opening. A few faint lines in surface, probably in-the-firing. Glazed-over chip on each handle. H 8 1/4".
