Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R. BUTT / W. City, D.C.," Washington, D.C. origin, circa 1835, large-sized ovoid jar with tooled foot, squared rim, and arching tab handles, decorated front and back with an exuberant brushed cobalt flowering plant design. Each design features a wavy central stem, several leaves, and three large tulips. The decoration on the reverse, which is even more elaborate than that on the front, includes highly unusual wing-shaped embellishments to the tips of the tulips' petals. The front includes a large brushed cobalt 6 below the rim. Exceedingly rare size for this desirable Washington D.C. maker. Strong color and extraordinary decoration. One of the finest examples of Richard Butt stoneware known. Professionally restored spidering crack on front, touching some of decoration. Restoration to underside. 9 1/2" V-shaped hairline extending up from base on right side of reverse of jar. 2 1/2" hairline extending up from base up under one handle. H 16".
