Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "S. COOPER / No 4 DIAMOND / PITTSBURGH, PA," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled midsection and shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an undulating fuschia vine design underscored by a stripe and a second wavy vine with leaves. Base decorated with a brushed cobalt "6" flanked by large dashes. Reverse bears the rare merchant stamp of Stephen Cooper. A fine and boldly-decorated example of Western PA stoneware. Crude restoration to large section of right handle, not visible from the front. In-the-firing minor separation at handle terminal on left handle. H 16 3/8".
