Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, probably NJ origin, circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, brush-decorated with a painterly rendering of a crested bird with turned head and profuse feather detail throughout, perched on an elaborate stump brimming with leaves. Reverse inscribed "2.G.". Unusually fine and elaborate decoration, particularly for the region in which this piece was made. The jar's distinctive gallon notation on the reverse indicates it was made by an as-yet-unidentified potter likely based in New Jersey, known for having produced a few other jars with dramatic figural decoration, including a "schoolteacher" and a man walking a dog. Three rim chips, two of which occurred in the firing. Two overfired spots to front. Faintness to "2" in "2.G.". H 13 1/2".
