Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK," Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, circa 1810, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and footed base, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel design forming three bowknot or "clamshell" motifs in the distinctive Commeraw style. Impressed below with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "COMMERAW.S / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK." Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Beautiful form, unusually large size, and classic decoration long-associated with this potter's work. A 5 3/4" Y-shaped line from spout on side of jug. An in-the-firing contact mark to top of handle. A small in-the-firing fissure to spout where it meets handle. In-the-firing contact marks to reverse. A very faint, approximately 4 3/4" vertical line to reverse. Base chips.
