Outstanding One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HARRISBURG PA," attributed to Shem Thomas at the John Young Pottery, circa 1856-1858, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, lavishly-decorated with a brushed tulip plant bearing two exceptionally large, drooping blossoms flanking a jagged motif ascending from the center of the plant. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable size, bold decoration, and vivid color. The distinctive brushwork on this jar leads to a firm attribution to New-York-trained potter, Shem Thomas, one of the leading figures in the Harrisburg school of stoneware production. Excellent condition with a glazed-over 7/8" chip to one handle and minor chipping to bottom edge of jar. H 10 7/8".
