Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Hudson River Valley, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled neck, and semi-rounded spout, brush-decorated with a Manhattan-inspired foliate motif featuring splayed leaves accented with slashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Literature: Illustrated in Hartmann, "The Stoneware of Early Albany: A Mystery Solved," Ceramics in America 2012, fig. 15. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Excellent condition with a 1 1/8" in-the-firing chip to proper right side of jug and a 1/2" in-the-firing chip to proper right side of jug, the latter with lines descending from it. A crack to lower handle terminal. A glazed-over in-the-firing ping to front. A minuscule nick to foot. Some additional minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 8 1/2".
