One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and manganese-highlighted design of two conjoined stems formed from a three-pronged stylus bearing numerous oval leaves. Manganese highlights to handle terminals. Desirable form and unusual decoration in both style and slip treatment. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. One handle broken into three pieces and reglued, including two chips along breaks. Heavy chipping around base. A small, circular in-the-firing contact mark to one side. H 9 7/8".
