One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Jackson Courthouse, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, stenciled "H.F. ARMSTRONG. / DEALER IN / DRY GOODS, . GROCERIES, / NOTIONS & C. / JACKSON C.H. W. VA." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Very nice condition with minor wear to shoulder molding, a small in-the-firing ping to right of stenciling, and some surface wear to reverse. H 9 3/4".
