Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Applied Lizard, Signed "Chester Hewell," Gillsville, GA, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face including kaolin eyes with cobalt pupils, eyebrows, small nose, rounded ears, chin, and mouth with broken china teeth. Head with applied lizard featuring one cobalt-decorated kaolin eye. Surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze. Underside incised with Chester Hewell signature. Provenance: Carl and Marian Mullis Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 3/4".
