Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing two spotted fuchsias, between groups of straight and wavy freehand stripes. Base with cobalt-script "5" flanked by graduated wavy stripes above two additional stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Some wear to cobalt and light surface wear to jar. A shallow, glazed-over rim chip. Three overfired areas to surface, one of which on reverse includes an in-the-firing contact mark. A small chip to one handle. H 16 1/2".
