Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Wreath and 1888 Date, Stamped "LEWIS JONES / PITTSTON PA," 1888, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with the large date, 1888, surrounded by wreath-shaped stem of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the finest examples of Lewis Jones stoneware that we have offered. A 5" Y-shaped line to left of decoration. A shallow 5/8" chip to interior of rim. Some spots of in-the-firing blistering to clay. H 11 3/4".
