Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of an Eagle with Speech Bubble, Inscribed 'Akron. O," Akron, OH origin, circa 1876, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a spread-winged eagle clutching arrows, featuring a speech bubble emanating from its beak, inscribed "Akron. O" in promotion of the major pottery-producing city of Akron, Ohio. A looping flourish appears below the bird. Shoulder slip-trailed with a number "6" flanked by dashes. Relatively few freehand eagle decorations are known in Ohio stoneware production. Provenance: Acquired by the consignor in the early 1970s. Very nice condition with some light surface wear, two minor rim chips, and a shallow, in-the-making rim chip on reverse, which is glazed over. H 13 7/8".
