Rare Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Lm / July 21-1853," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, 1853, highly-ovoid jar with applied lug handles and flaring, semi-rounded rim, the surface covered in a streaky brown alkaline glaze with raised, greenish-colored runs; deeply-incised across the shoulder "Lm / July 21-1853," along with two slash marks, a hallmark of Drake's work, and four punctates, denoting four gallons. Classic Drake form and potting style featuring a crisp inscription. Provenance: A previously-undocumented work, which recently surfaced in the Southern U.S. One handle missing. Most of opposite handle missing. A large top-to-bottom Y-shaped crack from rim, which includes a small chip to shoulder and thin sliver missing near base. This crack continues across the underside and 3" up reverse. Old wire around rim. Some in-the-firing residue near base on front. H 13 1/2".
