Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WEST TROY, / N.Y. / POTTERY.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes likely-original salt-glazed stoneware lid, incised with an X on the knob. Some fry to cobalt. A thin 2" crack from rim on side of jar. A salt drip to below handle on opposite side. A small shallow base chip on front of jar, probably in-the-firing. Small chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with small chips to knob and light staining. H (excluding lid) 14".
