Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON PA.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a heavily-leafed stem bearing a blossom composed of a series of graduated spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Light staining to exterior. Water glass staining to interior. A 3 1/2 hairline on underside, extending through a 1 1/4" in-the-firing chip at base and 4 1/4" up reverse. A second, minor in-the-firing base chip to reverse. A small area of fry to right side of decoration and a minuscule spot of fry to flower. H 11 7/8".
